As Taguig looks forward to the future, the city government focuses its attention on empowering residents, supplying youths with the tools and resources necessary to succeed while supporting adult constituents with employment opportunities.

Education Advocates
The City’s need for quality education has spawned a number of initiatives. Preschoolers get an early start on school with 138 daycare centers—108 of them new. Since 2001, 189 new classrooms have been built to combat poor student-to-classroom ratios. While new buildings are being constructed, existing school structures are undergoing renovations. In addition, the Special Education (SPED) Center was established to provide mentally disabled children from ages 5 to 15 with quality education.

To address the high cost of schooling, the Office of Social Welfare and Development’s Scholarship Program have subsidized 7,600 scholars from elementary to college level. The city has rewarded more than 400 exceptional Math and Science students from Taguig Science High School with monthly stipends and a supply of books and notebooks. And over half a million students from 30 public schools have received notebooks and schoolbags from the city.

In an effort to elevate education to global standards, the city distributed 300 computers for 30 public school computer labs. The Computer Literacy Program, supported by the local government’s IT department, offers free basic computer classes to students in Grades 5 and 6. Global-model Informatica Learning Center based in Maharlika Village, backed by the city, aims to increase computer literacy and skills training for students and residents alike.

Raising Employment
To assist residents with issues of unemployment, the local government has set up the Public Employment Service Office, or PESO, which has effectively boosted employment levels by 65% by endorsing applicants and conducting over 50 job fairs. The PESO has successfully placed over 31,000 jobseekers since 2001. Taguig students also benefit from the PESO, which is mandated by law to employ students during summer via the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES).

Powered up: Sports and Youth Development
Looking to increase employment, the Sangguniang Panglunsod passed a city ordinance requiring businesses operating in the city and contractors dealing with the local government to to hire 70% of their workforce from Taguig while providing corresponding tax incentives.

The City of Taguig encourages athleticism and leadership within the city’s youth through various projects:

• Taguig Basketball Association (TBA). The biggest basketball league in Asia, it boasts of more than 11,000 players and gives homegrown athletes a venue to showcase their talents.

• New Sports Venues. A total of 37 new covered basketball courts and multi-purpose halls across the city provide youths a venue for activities.

• 2nd Taguig Youth Congress. A seminar led by Mayor Freddie Tiñga encouraged student leaders to step up as role models in the future premier city.
