A
city fueled by its people and driven by
strong and adept leadership, Taguig is built
on hard work and diligence. The city’s
population is one of the fastest growing
in Metro Manila. In 2005, the populace was
at around 580,000 with an annual growth
rate of 4.45%. It’s a fortuitous cycle:
people move to the city because of the opportunities
while industry thrives in Taguig thanks
to incentives, one of which is access to
a skilled and principled workforce. Thanks
to the efforts of the city government, Taguig
has welcomed a new era in its labor force,
peopled by educated and skilled workers
and guided by enlightened offices like the
Taguig Manpower Development Office and the
Office of Social Welfare and Development
(OSWD), which have put nearly 7,000 constituents
through skills training courses, from dressmaking
to food processing. The Department of Social
Welfare and Development also developed the
Self-Employed Assistance Program, by which
the DSWD presented 130 families with capital
assistance to start their own business.
Talented Taguig
Mayor Freddie Tiñga knows that his
constituents can sing and dance. A part
of Mayor Tiñga’s culture and
development arts program, Friday Talent
Nights is a weekly, citywide talent search
that travels around the 18 barangays. Launched
in 2004, the talent night opens doors to
participants interested in the entertainment
field.
Start young
From elementary school onwards, a dynamic
education strategy exposes students to lesson
plans and programs necessary to stay competitive
in today’s global market. World-class
educational programming is broadcast into
classrooms while computer labs throughout
Taguig’s public schools teach students
computer literacy.
Encouraging the youth to pursue higher education,
the OSWD awards scholarships to exemplary
students. Taguig is home to several institutions
of higher learning, among them: Technological
University of the Philippines in Upper Taguig
and Polytechnic University of the Philippines
in Bagumbayan.
Melting Pot
Taguig is known as one city that is home
to people from all walks of life, a culturally
diverse area representing the Filipino Diaspora.
Upper Taguig, home to over half of the city’s
population, is also the location of Barangay
Maharlika, an Islamic community specially
created by presidential proclamation, and
the Blue Mosque, a religious center and
socio-civic meeting place for Muslims. In
Taguig, peace and goodwill reigns among
its citizens. No matter where one hails
from or what one believes, being a Taguigeño
is a bond valued by all creeds.
