The
City of Taguig celebrates innovation. The
administration understands that technology
plays an important role in building a modern
city as harbinger of progress and a means
to socio-economic growth. Under Mayor Tiñga’s
leadership, Taguig has experienced the computerization
of the local governments, much improved
student computer literacy and IT training
for its work force.
IT Training
Preparing for the future, Taguig’s
local government encourages computer literacy
and technological skills training amongst
its constituents. The city launched computer
labs in 30 public schools while Taguig high
school teachers received a 4-day training
course on Information and Communication
Technology literacy, desktop productivity
and software development conducted by FEATI
University Information Technology Department.
Teachers at the Taguig Science High School
were given laptops as educational tools
by the local government in partnership with
Apple Computers. The City has also been
actively developing partnerships with various
software companies and Business Process
Outsourcing firms to develop training programs
in line with the growing needs of the booming
BPO sector. Ultimately, the dual purpose
is to provide better opportunities for Taguig’s
citizens while developing a skilled workforce
that will stay at the forefront of the IT
industry.
Attracting Business
The city government hopes to attract more
businesses in key sectors by creating a
more responsive and friendlier investment
climate, from the improved infrastructure
to lower taxes. New growth corridors such
as the Food Terminal, Inc. (FTI) complex
aim to create more opportunities for investors
and jobseekers alike. FTI has a total area
of more than 100 hectares that currently
has over 300 medium-scaled companies in
the food, electronics, garments and service
industries. Along with the Veterans Center
also located in Upper Taguig, FTI is being
primed for revitalization to attract more
information technology and business process
outsourcing related businesses.
A revised local business tax structure that
took effect in 2006 provides an enhanced
incentive package for banks and other financial
institutions, insurance companies, hotels,
car dealers, pharmaceuticals, software development
companies, telecommunications, and light
industry and manufacturing firms.
IT Stage
With the construction of Taguig’s
convention grounds in the works, the city
is fast-becoming a choice gathering place
for tech heads.
The Computer Manufacturers, Distributors
and Dealers Association of the Philippines,
or COMDDAP, announced that they would permanently
hold their annual exposition in Taguig City.
The 4-day COMDDAP Expo is the biggest computer
and technology exhibition in the country
with booths from around 40 information and
communication technology, telecommunication,
and consumer electronic companies.
Huawei’s Fixed Network Solutions Exhibition
also chose Fort Bonifacio to showcase its
next generation networks and integrated
solutions in March 2006. The 4-day exhibition
drew attendance from the country’s
leading telecom operators.
