TAGUIG’S “GENIUSES” RULE CHEERLEADING COMPETITION Taguig Science High School bags championship; TNHS 4th placer

Two public high schools from Taguig City bested 11 other schools from all over the country, as they ruled the prestigious National Cheerleading Championships (NCC) High School Division held at the Ynares Sports Center, Pasig City last week.
The Sinag Pep Squad of the Taguig Science High School (TSHS), a pilot school for students who excel in academics particularly Math and Science, danced their way to the crown after only three years of competing in the cheerleading tournament. Taguig National High School (TNHS), on the other hand, debuted in the competitions and placed fourth behind Baguio City National High School and Rizal High School.
Mayor Freddie R. Tiñga expressed his pride for the two Taguig public schools and described the twin wins as a victory not only for the city, but more importantly for today’s youth.
The mayor particularly noted that the students of TSHS who excel in their academics are the same students who have shown exceptional abilities in extracurricular activities such as cheerleading.
“Our students today have evolved into a much better, holistic youth. With their win in this competition, they have proven that they are equally talented, both inside and outside the classrooms,” Tiñga said.
TNHS’s fourth-place finish, on the other hand, is quite impressive for a first-timer, having to battle through the finals against 2009 NCC High School Division Champion Pasig Catholic College and perennial competitors Rizal High School, Colegio San Agustin – Biñan, and Children of Mary Immaculate College – Las Piñas.
The Sinag Team is coached by their TSHS Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (Mapeh) Coordinator Kate Vivas, while the TNHS is mentored by Mrs. Edelmira E. Agnote.
According to Vivas, the 30-man TSHS Sinag Pep Squad wowed the audience and the judges with their impressive pyramids display and strong execution of stunts and tosses. The judges, she said, were also impressed with their six (6) partner stands and basket tosses.
The TNHS squad, on the other, aced tosses, showed great aptitude in the execution of basic elements and was equally good in stunts.
But what spelled the difference for TSHS Sinag team was, Vivas said, that its members are academic scholars. In fact, some of the team members are competing in interschool contests in various academic subjects.
“What is more impressive with them is that they are not just your ordinary cheer leaders or varsity members. They are honor students, who successfully juggle their extra-curricular activities with their academics,” Vivas said.
TSHS is the city’s pilot science high school, established by the Tiñga administration in September 2004, which gives scholarships to students with exemplary scholastic records, particularly in math and science.
Modeled after the American Cheerleading Competitions, the annual NCC brings together the best teams from all over the country. The contest employs international rules and regulations, therefore raising Philippine cheerleading at par with world standards.
Tiñga, on the other hand, assured that his administration will continue to uphold the importance of the youth’s education and development through the local government’s various programs.
