In Taguig, every child’s welfare is a priority.

True to this commitment, the local government is extending its supplementary feeding program dubbed Lingap at Aruga sa Nutrisyon Isagawa from 90 days to 120 days.

According to City Nutrition Office officer-in-charge Ms. Julie Bernabe, the additional 30 days will “allow us to make sure that the rehabilitation of the child’s health is definitely complete, even after their weight normalizes already within 90 days.”

The City Nutrition Office has started implementing this year’s modified supplementary feeding program in the 28 barangays beginning September 1.

It will run until December 29, 2017.

More than 900 Taguigeño kids aged 12 to 71 months are the current beneficiaries of the program, which aims to provide proper nourishment to underweight, underheight, and stunted children.

The feeding sessions are conducted in each barangay, during which the children are served with nutritious afternoon snacks like carbonara, champorado and spaghetti.

With the help of a Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS), each meal is done and prepared by the mothers themselves.

During weekends, BNS have the discretion to provide the uncooked meals to the mothers for them to personally cook at the comfort of their houses.

Taguig City’s feeding program is complemented by the yearly “Oplan Timbang” (OPT) from January to March, where the height and weight of children 0-5 years old in each barangay are recorded.

The data collected are used to determine the proper nutritional intervention for the child, who is classified either as severely underweight, underweight, normal, or overweight.

Aside from the supplementary feeding program, mothers of the beneficiaries are encouraged to attend mothers’ class held once a week and led by a BNS, doctor, nurse or midwife.

The mothers’ class allows the participants to learn more about proper child rearing including the importance of breastfeeding and complete immunization.

Through the collaborative efforts of the various departments, mothers are also provided seeds that will enable them to plant vegetables that they can serve to their children.

They are given a chance to learn different ways of earning money–through bleach making, rug making and food preservation, among others.

For three (3) consecutive years (2013 to 2015), Taguig City was awarded the prestigious Green Banner award by the National Nutrition Council-National Capital Region (NNC-NCR). The recognition is conferred to local government units which display outstanding performance in implementing its nutrition programs.

This consistent performance led Taguig City to receive the CROWN Award in 2016.

The city is currently aiming for the NNC’s top award – the Nutrition Honor Award. This recognition is the highest award given by the NNC to the recipients of CROWN Award which managed to maintain quality nutrition program implementation for another three consecutive years. ###
