To enable residents to report any form of abuse against children, Taguig City launched an emergency hotline at Taguig Lakeshore Hall in Barangay Lower Bicutan on May 2.

Through the hotline (0937-587-0000), Taguigenos will be able to report any looming threat to children, which in turn will enable city authorities to respond faster.

The emergency hotline was launched simultaneously with the Taguig Comprehensive Youth Welfare, Protection and Development Program. The said program aims to protect the youth from specific dangers to their health, welfare and well-being such as cybersex and sexual exploitation, teenage pregnancy, drugs, bullying and smoking.

Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano led the launching of the program. She pointed out that the city government has always been “dedicated and aggressive” in addressing the issues faced by children through the continuous implementation of programs that will surely uplift and improve their lives.

“We believe that the young generation is a gift from the Lord, so we need to prepare and protect them; and therefore we will also need the support of our hardworking employees in attaining this goal,” Mayor Lani added.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) continues to conduct interventions for the prevention of violence and exploitation or child trafficking by creating community awareness through community education and assistance for the victims-survivors of these cases.

Rescue operations were also organized by different agencies such as the Philippine National Police (PNP) Cybercrime Group, PNP Women and Children Protection Center (WCPC) Anti-Human Trafficking Division of Camp Crame, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and even the US Department of Homeland Security to save the children from abuse.

Aside from this, Taguig City has also implemented programs like the Adolescent Health Program, which promotes healthy lifestyle, responsible sexuality, and provides youth-friendly comprehensive health care and services in order to protect them from the effects of early pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and other psychosocial concerns.

The local government is also committed in protecting the youth against illegal drugs by endorsing the users to Department of Health Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Bicutan. Taguig also provides assistance and support by allocating funds for the procurement of equipment that will be used by schools to address bullying problems.

With Taguig City’s concerted effort to protect and support children’s rights and welfare, the local government unit received the Seal of “Child-Friendly Local Governance” for two consecutive years (2014-2015) from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Mayor Lani also stressed that Taguig should not only be home to children who are receiving quality education, but also to young ones who are protected and cared for. ###
