Yearly ‘Araw ng Pagbasa’ lauded for highlighting importance of reading

Taguig City’s effort to ignite kids’ interest in reading earned the city’s public library the Most Innovative Library and Information Services award from the National Library of the Philippines and the National Committee on Library and Information Services of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The award, which was accepted by Taguig Library Office officer-in-charge Joselito Carpena Jr. on Nov. 28 at the City Garden Suites Hotel in Manila, recognized the city government’s “invaluable efforts in educating and inspiring the members of the community they serve by making their library activities more remarkable and most innovative.”

Lauded in particular was the city’s unique annual celebration, “Araw ng Pagbasa,” where children from across the city are invited to listen to stories told by select storytellers, including Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano.

This year’s edition, held last Nov. 27, converged more than 300 children. It was proof, Carpena said, that the traditional way of learning through books is still very much alive in the city.

“Even parents join their children during the activity, which shows how much they value the importance of reading for their kids,” said Carpena, a licensed librarian.

Carpena also highlighted the seminars conducted for child development center workers and teachers tackling the benefits of the library and reading.

Currently, the city library has thousands of books categorized in different sections: the General Reference Section, General Collection, Filipiniana, Periodicals, Aklatang Pambata, and Starbooks about Science and Technology, among others.

“The city also receives book donations from various organizations in the country and even abroad,” said Carpena. “We distribute these to all libraries of our schools in Taguig.”

To ensure that reading becomes a part of the life of every Taguig resident even in their homes, he said there is also a plan to expand the “barangay silid booklatan” which was started by Direk Lino Cayetano in 2013 when he was Congressman of the Second District, as well as to set up “book mobiles”– buses containing books which will go around the city.

“These are important for us to encourage kids to enjoy reading because it is through reading that they learn more about the world and even travel to different countries even though they are just staying in one place,” Carpena noted.

The Taguig City Library, located in the city hall premises, is open from Mondays to Saturdays, 8 a.m.-12 noon and 1 p.m.-5 p.m.

Ginawaran ng Most Innovative Library and Information Services award ang Taguig City Library mula sa mga kilalang organisasyong National Library of the Philippines at ng National Committee on Library and Information Services of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

“For invaluable efforts in educating and inspiring the members of the community they serve by making their library activities more remarkable and most innovative,” saad pa sa parangal sa Taguig.

“Even parents join their children during the activity, which shows how much they value the importance of reading for their kids,” wika pa ni Carpena, isang licensed librarian.

“The city also receives book donations from various organizations in the country and even abroad,” saad pa ni Carpena. “We distribute these to all libraries of our schools in Taguig.”

“These are important for us to encourage kids to enjoy reading because it is through reading that they learn more about the world and even travel to different countries even though they are just staying in one place,” wika pa ni Carpena.
