All systems go for Taguig River Festival 2011

It’s all systems go for this year’s Taguig River Festival, a ten-day celebration done in honor of Barangay Sta. Ana’s patron saint, St. Anne, and at the same time is considered Taguig City’s most historic and important festival.

Previously referred to as “Banak Festival,” the Taguig River Festival begins each year on July 17 and culminates on St. Anne’s Feast Day on July 26. The city government of Taguig under Mayor Lani Cayetano has lined up a series of activities that aim to make the observance of the festival as meaningful as ever.
“The Taguig River Festival places the city’s rich history, tradition and culture at the forefront for all our Metro Manila neighbors and foreign guests to see,” proudly stated the 29-year-old local chief executive.
Mayor Cayetano said that Taguig River Festival 2011 will be kicked off on Sunday, July 17, with the “Araw ng mga Nakakatanda.” Some 500 senior citizens will be provided with gift packs as well as snacks during the event.
On Wednesday, July 20, Taguigeños will get to see a colorful motorcade from Barangay Sta. Ana to District 2, leading to a “Musikultura” evening show that will feature the performance of a top local band.
A “Kumpilan” activity will take place on “Araw ng mga Kabataan,” Saturday, July 23, wherein some 1,200 children will receive the sacrament at St. Anne Church. “The kids will also be treated to free food courtesy of their Ate Lani,” said lawyer Darwin Icay, the mayor’s spokesperson.
Meanwhile, a street dancing activity dubbed “Indakan sa Daan” will wow residents on Monday, July 25.
Icay bared that the two well-known highlights of the festival—the “Regata” (boat race) and “Pagodahan” (fluvial parade)—will be carried out on feast day itself, July 26, in the historic Taguig River.
“The boat race or Karera ng Bangkang Lunday is one of the aspects of the festival that is truly exciting for Taguig residents, as it pits local fishermen against each other in a friendly race,” explained Icay.
The Pagodahan, on the other hand, serves as an enduring symbol of unity among Taguigeños as it features the exchange of traditional food between the boat riders representing the different communities in the city. Mayor Cayetano will lead the event.
Mayor Cayetano bared that her administration has also worked hard to preserve Taguig River—the festival’s showpiece—under a gradual, sustainable and extensive rehabilitation program.
“Ever since becoming mayor last year, I’ve made it a priority to clean up and beautify our historic river, which has been a quiet witness to Taguig’s rise from a backwater town to the bustling Global City that it is today,” she said.
The mayor enjoined her fellow Taguigeños to join the celebration by taking part in the activities.
